Title: The Scientist
Chapter Five continued:
GODS OF GOOD AND EVIL
Damien held up his guard with the gun.
A soccer sized glowing thing came out from the dark. It was a live ball of gray flesh with one arm coming out of each side. Its arms were scrawny, like the zinth’s. Its hands were also of their nature- except the claws were an unnatural ebony color and jagged, and had rust on the ends.
It reared its claws, made a screeching sound, and lunged for Damien.
"My god!" Damien aimed at it and tried to fire the pistol thing. Nothing. "Damn this infernal alien blaster!" Damien squeezed the trigger like mad. As the arm creature zoomed closer, the gun made a humming sound, as if charging up. The thing came into range- and swiped a rusty claw at Damien.
Damien was hit on the side of the head. Right above his left temple was a gash that led to his ear, nearly slicing it off. "Aaaaaaa!" his head was pulled back, because the thing’s claw was stuck in the flesh. Damien flipped completely around and crouched, clutching the gun in one hand, pressing the other between his head and his shoulder.
The gun was glowing now that Damien was holding the trigger down.
Damien had to kill the thing before it killed him. Trying his best to ignore the warm and uneasy sensation of flowing gore down his head, he took the gun, aimed at the creature (which was speeding at Damien, both arms up, claws centered), and fired as the thing swiped at him. Its blood, black in color, sped past Damien.
He immediately set the gun on the surface of the platform and ripped off his left sleeve. He tied it tightly around his gash, so it was at an angle. It clutched his left, damaged ear, but was over the right ear. Damien breathed in through gritted teeth.
When the pain eased, Damien stared at the gun. Its glow was slowly dissipating. He picked it up. Focusing on the glass oval, he squeezed the trigger and held. It hummed and glowed brighter. He let go and fired into the darkness. The light coming from it darkened slightly.
It had to be charged. Damien squeezed the thing until it gave off a blinding ray of light and began to tremble. It would not intensify at this point. Damien creased his eyes and sneered into the dark. "Give me your worst, ass wipe." He whispered.
The dark responded with a creature similar to the arm thing, except it had a tail made of a shining metal. It strode by, not giving Damien any notice. Damien aimed at it. Then it paused. It quickly shifted its body to Damien, not moving its tail. Then, without moving its body, it flapped its tail. Then it flew to Damien at an astonishing speed.
Damien shot once. A red laser came shooting out, and went right through the thing’s ball of flesh of an abdomen. It made a hole right through the center. The thing froze. A thick black substance came oozing out, and slid down the body and streamed off the creature in a thin waterfall. The arm monster slowly clenched bony fists. Its skin tightened and became pale as the blood stream thinned. It withered like a raisin and fell down into the black pit of black below. No thud could be heard.
Damien let out a breath of relief and relaxed his arm holding the blaster. He scratched the back of his head with the other. The platform began moving again, startling him.
After a half a minute it stopped again. Damien held the gun up, charging it. One of them arm things appeared one with a tail. Damien shot it- dead. Then another flew up. Damien blasted that one. Then a third popped up. Damien shot at it, but it dodged the laser. It shrieked, and the sound echoed in the vast blackness, coming back as it lunged to Damien. He shot and killed it.
Then a group of them could be heard screeching somewhere behind Damien. He turned, and saw five of them coming straight at him.
Without much time to react, he shot one of them on an involuntary spring of muscle. Holding the trigger, he swiped a red laser across the line of monsters, killing all but one. The remaining creature swiped at his Hailian armor. The monster had lost an arm, and bled to death in five seconds.
This happened over and over again for fifteen tense minutes. Damien shot like mad, killing monster after monster, and enduring some nasty wounds on his exposed skin. His chest plate indented into his flesh and blood squirted out from the end of the armor. Still Damien ignored the pain, knowing that the threat needed to be eliminated.
The creatures flew in patterns, like birds migrating. One group formed a triangle, and tightened it as they came closer. This group slammed Damien head on, just below the chest. This created the largest and sharpest dent on his armor. He shot the group dead. Another team formed a star formation. It took Damien a few minutes to shoot them all because of their far distance and movement. That one group seemed to be teasing him. Aside from these designs and formations were a hundred aimlessly flying creatures trying to knock Damien off his feet.
When the final creature was shot dead, Damien was breathing deeply and hardly, with trouble and pain. He kept his gun aimed at the dark, charging it. "You can relax now," came the voice again. "You have passed my test."
"What test?" Yelled Damien.
"If you could handle that than you can handle almost anything."
Damien licked his upper teeth and set his arm to his side. His bare arm was rather bloody, and stung like hell. Damien coughed, and blood splattered out. He wiped his mouth with his right arm (the one with the sleeve) and the platform began to move again.
This time he flew for about three minutes. Damien sat
cross-legged on the moving platform, head down. He was tired,
in pain, and wondered how the Ranandians were doing in the war. The only thing he had to look forward to when he got back- if he ever got back- was Rudy.
