Title: The Scientist

Chapter Five continued:
GODS OF GOOD AND EVIL
"What is that?" asked Damien, who stood behind Roland. After what he had earlier encountered, he chose to keep his distance.
"It’s a Head Foot. I assure you, it’s harmless." At this time Damien saw it had a tail. It was long and stringy, like a mouse’s tail. It wagged like a small dog’s, up and down whacking the table.
"So let me guess," Damien said, inching closer to the table. "You found a bunch of dead zinths and decided to make yourself a house pet?"
"That was the general idea." Ronald pet the thing on top of the head- the set of teeth, actually.
"Okay," Damien took a breath and held it as he thought of something to say. His brother, the scientist of evil things, he thought, was smiling at his irregular creation. "About this truth you’re suppose to tell me."
"Oh yes, I have a few things to say." Ronald picked up the Head Foot. Its hand feet squirmed in the air. He set it on the floor. It looked at its creator, then Damien, and ran off onto the sticky path. It rolled around on it, playing. "He likes it." Ronald said, and patted his confused looking brother’s shoulder.
"First tell me why you "tested" me." Damien took his attention off the ball thing.
"It’s a policy around here. One must be of acceptable wit and strength to make it here. We don’t want to give off secrets to just anybody."
"I am not just anybody."
"You are not. That’s why I made it easier. Those things you fought in the dark space were just hollow images. You felt them because of a force field around them that makes them seem real."
"Okay. Tell me some of this truth the zinth by the red stuff made to be all secret and great."
"Alright. First thing is about the virus. Turns out the virus was an experimental cure for cancer and AIDS. However, the addition of chemisenza rendered the only sample of it deadly. This was not found out until after the virus was given to hospitals for test treatment. Some hundred hospital facilities had tested it on people and animals. Those infected gave off devastating traces of the virus, and those who came in contact with he carrier were dead men. And those who touch the contacted were dead men, and so on. But it didn’t affect children.
"The reason for this was that this chemisenza stuff was found on a child abuse victim. The corpse was found at the city dump in Washington. The boy had not a trace of germs on him, and a strange substance was found. This substance was tested on every bacterium that could be tested, including AIDS and cancer. The scientists who found it thought adding it to the developing cure would intensify its effectiveness, but…"
"But what?" Damien whispered.
"They were wrong. They killed every soul on the planet- except the children."
"Why?"
"We don’t know. The zinths are aftermath of the combination of the believed cure for AIDS and chemisenza. But this chemisenza is an alien element. All the zinths, myself, and a few other scientists and one technological master mind, are on a mission to locate its origin."
"That’s strong stuff." There was a moment of silence. Then, the Head Foot came sprinting down the blue sticky mat. It had wandered off deep into the lab while playing. It was running away from something- in fear. The sound of the rapid sticky footsteps caught the scientist’s and the warrior’s attention. "Weeeeeeeeeeeeenger!" the Head Foot squeaked and attempted to climb Ronald’s leg.
"What is it saying?" asked Damien.
Ronald’s face became pale as he stared down into the lab. "The Winger Cordling has escaped."
"What?"
"We need to get our backsides into that elevator." With that, Ronald, Damien, and the Head Foot darted to the doors. As Ronald pushed a red button, a wire with an arrowhead slammed into the button panel. "Too late," he said in a quivery voice. The Head Foot squeaked, Damien looked back and screamed, and Ronald slowly set his arm to his side, knowing they would all die.
