Title: The Stone
As I walked into the cave, shivering as the shockingly cold cave air pressed upon my bare cheeks, each breath a lingering vapor before me, I felt a sudden chill sweep over me, running up and down the length of my spine, the hairs on the back of my neck bristling beneath the waves of ebony tresses that cascaded about my shouders. I raised my torch still higher, the ring of its light widening ever so slightly, and with my free hand I clung a little more tightly to my cloak, drawing it up around my shoulders. I peered uncertainly into the loominous and seemingly eternal darkness that spoke of ong, cold passageways and whispered of foreboding shadowed tunnels twisting and turning in the gloom that could naught but guaruntee my demise. And, after taking one last long pleading look over my shoulder at what remained of my traveling companions, wishing that they would come with me, or to tell me that I didn't have to do this terrifying task after all, I shut my eyes and turned from them, blindly running through the long cave tunnel with all of my speed, a frenzy of panic washing over me as my feet carried me deeper and deeper into dhadow. And, as I ran on, consumed by desperation, and I was swallowed by the darkness and gloom, I fought to repress angry and terrified tears. Almost comletely blinded by fear, tears and darkness, I hadn't seen the stone that lay in my path and stumbled over it, throwning myself to the ground with a thud, my torch clanking and clattering into the shadows, extinguishing entirely, leaving me alone in despair. And I simply lay there, my skirt undoubtedly torn in several places, blood oozing from a slash on my cheek, my chest heaving with every breath, engulfed by the thick and absolute blackness. And all was silence as I lay there, motionless on the ground, withing to be back in the merry company of my companions, or, better still, to be back home again. And at all of these thoughts of futile hope, my long-supressed sobs ehoed all around me...rising up from the bitter, bitter silence...And I cried and cried until my eyes were weary and exhausted from weeping...and there...on the cave floor...as even the darkness seemed to fade from view...I slowly...slipped...into a deep...and dreamless...sleep.......
