Book Review Of Asmir In Vienna

11/6/2003

‘Asmir In Vienna’ by Christobel Mattingley is a sequel to the book, ‘No Gun For Asmir’, which is also written by Christobel Mattingley. Asmir In Vienna is an interesting book, but is a bit long and takes a while to read. I would not risk getting into trouble over this book. It is a moving story of Asmir’s new life in another country. I liked the ending because Asmir finally meets up with his long lost father. With some help from Elizabeth Honey’s pictures, it felt like I was listening in on their conversations. I wasn’t really hooked from the beginning, but I could see, hear and smell the background setting. I could feel the atmosphere Christobel Mattingley is trying to create. It wasn’t very hard to put the book down, but it was easy to lose your position on the page, because there was so much writing on it. I kind of cared about what happened to the characters in the end, because it is a true story. I really felt like an eavesdropper on their conversations! The illustrations of Elisabeth Honey were really well drawn. They were pictures of Asmir’s family, and they were drawn by hand with 2B pencil! I think that Asmir in Vienna is a read-alone book, because it can be described in one word. Long. It is a very long story. The style and size of the print is a bit small and hard to keep track of where you are up to. The words are well to build up the atmosphere and create images in my mind. The language and sentence structure contributes to the atmosphere. This is not a book I would like to receive, but I wouldn’t mind giving it as a present, as long as it isn’t too costly, because if it is, I certainly wouldn’t spend my pocket money on, because it isn’t that good. I would probably not recommend this book to children my age, because it may bore them because of how long it is. The style and size of the print is not very easy to read. I am glad that I have read this book, because now I know about people fleeing from Sarajevo, and refugees trying to get into other countries. I can see why the print is so small, if it were any bigger; it would take up five hundred pages!
