Title: That Look...
The warm autumn sun streamed through the window of my first grade classroom as all of the forty first graders slouched in their seats, bored out of their minds. Everyone except me. I sat bolt upright in my chair, eager to see if the teacher, who was pacing the aisles, looking at each of her students in turn, was about to give out a spelling paper. Or maybe math. As she passed my desk, she gave me a look - you've seen it before, you remember. That look that says 'there's something special about you, and I can't tell what it is'. Yeah. That's the one. And she finishes my row without a word and goes back to the front of the class.
'Children, when it is your turn, I would like you to tell me what you would like to be when you grow up,' she says, her gaze lingering on me for a moment. 'Susan, why don't you start?'
And the other kids said a lot of the same things like being a doctor if you were a boy or a nurse if you were a girl. (This was mainly because Susan wanted to be a nurse because her older sister, who was in sixth grade, wanted to be a nurse, and everyone wanted to be like Susan. And Mike, the boy who sits behind Susan, has a crush on her and wants to work wherever she does, and...well...Mike's a bully, so if you know what's good for you, you want to do as he does...or else.)
As usual, I was last. I was always last, because I sat at the last desk of the last row in the room. Not because I was bad or anything. It's just that at our school, we sat according to our last names. And, being Greek, my last name begins with a Z. So I was always last for everything.
When it was my turn, I ramained silent at first, my mind scrambling. I needed to have a perfect answer. I couldn't just say anything. I was afraid of getting an F. No, I would have an honest answer, and I would get my A, and that was final!
'Jenny? What do you want to be?'
After a long pause, I decide to answer what my mother was and hoped for an A.
'Christian.'
Miss Jenkens gave me that look again and took a step toward my desk. 'What was that you said, dear?'
I cleared my throat and said it even more loudly than before. I was proud of my answer. It was original, honest, interesting, and NO OTHER KID IN THE FIRST GRADE had said it! Wow!
'Miss Jenkins, when I grow up, I would like to be a Christian.'
