Title: Something Evil This Way Comes (part 3)

Heaving a sigh and following her, Jimmy cautiously asked, “What’s for breakfast?”

“Porridge,” was the reply.

Jimmy looked up with hope gleaming in his eyes. “Porridge?”

Swinging the door open, she answered, “Uh-huh...”

Jimmy smiled to himself. A normal breakfast. That was the best news he’d heard all day.

“…with prunes.”

Jimmy stopped in his tracks and grimaced at his mother’s retreating back. “Great,” he grumbled, not bothering to hide the sarcasm in his voice. But his mother hardly noticed. Jimmy sank into a chair in front of a bowl of steaming porridge and stared at it with contempt. He stirred it a bit with his spoon, resting his chin in his hand.

His mother, who was propped up on her elbows, leaning on the counter, had been watching him stir his porridge for five minutes. “Well, go on, lad. It’s porridge. You like porridge. Besides, it isn’t going to bite, Jimmy,” she added with a laugh.

Astounded, she pursued, “But what about breakfast? You’ve got to eat, Jim.”

“I’m not hungry,” he answered, closing the door behind him. His mother instantly rushed to the window and threw it up. She opened her mouth to call after him, but reconsidered and closed it again. She watched him walk away with his hands in his pockets, his breath hanging in the air, a thin vapor in the cool morning air. She heaved a tired sigh and shook her head.

“Ooh, that boy. So much like his father. So much like him. That’s what worries me. Not hungry…? I swear sometimes I wonder if he’s still a hobbit. For all I know, he’ll be wearing shoes next, heaven forbid.” Then, her face softening, she added in a whisper. “Well…he’d better be home for supper.'
