Title: Something Evil This Way Comes (part 2)

James sat at the window, watching the sun rise lazily from behind the hills in the distance. He could tell already that something was about to happen. Something big. But, try as he might, he couldn’t see what it was. He let his gaze wander along the trees and let out and enormous yawn. Whatever was going to happen, he wished it would get on with it, because at the rate his day was going, there would be more yawns like that than he could manage.

Just then, he heard his mother calling him from the kitchen. “Jimmy! Breakfast!”

“I’m coming, mother!” he called back, dragging himself from the window and pulling on a fresh tunic. Knowing better than to arrive late to a meal, he tried to go as quickly as he could, but he also knew that it was a worse crime to be late and look as if you’d only just rolled out of bed than to be merely late. Considering this, he hurried to the mirror and tried as best he could to tame the unruly black curls that dominated his head, without much luck. Having done this, he darted out the door and down the hall, skidding to a stop in front of his mother, who had left the kitchen to see what was keeping him. He nearly bumped into her, but, stopping inches from her, staggered back a step or two, trying his best to look innocent.

“Morning, mother,” he said sweetly, flashing her what he hoped was an innocent grin.

Unfortunately for him, she was not convinced. “Late for breakfast, young man?”

Jimmy’s shoulders sagged and his innocent pretence vanished from his face. “Sorry, mother.”

Still not satisfied, his mother continued, “What this time? Daydreaming again?”

Helpless, Jimmy shrugged. “I’ve got a lot on my mind.”

Raising an eyebrow, his mother her fingers through his matted black curls exclaiming, “Ugh! And you’re hair–“ she stopped short, staring at his middle. “Jimmy! Your shirt!”

Confused, Jimmy looked down at his shirt to see what was wrong. Seeing nothing, he looked up at this mother. “What’s the matter?” he asked.

“It’s un-tucked,” she replied flatly. Jimmy rolled his eyes and tucked in his shirt. “I swear, child. You’re fifteen years old and you can’t even dress yourself properly for breakfast!”

“Sorry, mum…” he mumbled, bitter that his day had taken such a bad turn so early. His mother often did this. Sometimes, he thought, she did it only to embarrass him. Especially when she did it in public.

His mother’s face softened slightly. “C’mon, kiddo. Eat your breakfast.”
