Title: Something Evil This Way Comes (Part 4)

Jim wandered up the road toward the village square, where he planned to buy his breakfast from the wares of an eager vendor. He heaved an enormous sigh and shoved his hands a little deeper into his pockets, throwing a quick glance over his shoulder at his mother watching from the window.

“Figures,” he mumbled resentfully, shaking his head as he turned again to face the road ahead, “can’t manage to keep her nose out of my business for once…once a busybody, always a busybody...”

But before he could utter another sulky word, something came at him at such great speed that he didn’t even see it coming until it had bumped right into him, knocking him off his feet and onto the road on his back with a thud.

“Ow…” he muttered, screwing up his face with irritation and sitting up, rubbing the back of his head. Turning to see what had knocked into him, he said, “What the…? Ben?”

Benjamin Proudfoot staggered to his feet and dusted off quickly. “Sorry, mate, but I’ve got the best of news – had to tell you – came as fast as I could – not fast enough, I suppose – “

Laughing, Jim interrupted, “Ben, you’re rambling, old boy. Slow down.”

Ben stopped and repeated, “Sorry, mate. But, you see, the best thing imaginable has happened.”

“And…?” Jim pursued. “What’s happened?”

Grinning from ear to ear, Ben replied with the gaiety of a child at Sancho’s Sweets for Sale, the Shire’s best-known candy shop, “Oh, you’ll never guess! Come, you must see for yourself, or you’ll never believe it!”

“Ben-“ Jim began to protest, but his friend had already seized his hand and begun to drag him along the road. They pushed their way through the square, now beginning to fill with noisy villagers, none of them showing the excitement that Ben had shown, and, Jim assumed, Ben obviously knew something they all had no knowledge of.

After jostling their way through the boisterous crowd, they continued to hurry down the main road that led out of the Shire. Ben had released Jim’s hand and they took quick steps along the dirt road. Squinting, Jim did see something slowly drawing nearer on the road quite a way ahead of them. He strained his eyes and hastened his pace, trying to get a better look. What looked like a large horse-drawn wagon was approaching, it’s tall driver sporting an even taller gray hat, a long beard (too long to belong to any hobbit), and a pipe held between smiling lips.
