Title: Somthing Evil This Way Comes (part5)

Ben smiled as the two of them stopped in their tracks, turning to watch realization dawn upon his friend’s handsome young features. Jim’s heart skipped a beat as he came to a dead halt, his eyes widening and his mouth gaping at the wagon. He took a few steps further, but Ben stayed back, smiling at his friend’s surprise.

In a suddenly breathless whisper, Jim said, “By all the powers to be…” again his pace started to quicken, along with his thundering heartbeat. “Can it be? Gandalf…?” he broke into a jog, which soon evolved into a fully-fledged canter as he sped toward the wagon, Ben struggling to match his speed as he went. “Gandalf. Gandalf!” He waved his arms ecstatically in greeting as he ran toward a now lightly chuckling Gandalf, who, upon reaching them, slowed the horses with a tug on the reins and came to a stop beside the two panting hobbits, who both wore identically gigantic grins.

He took a deep draw from his long-stemmed pipe and, after sending a large, spiraling smoke ring from his lips, he turned his sparkling gaze to the two hobbit boys. “Well, well, well,” he said with a smile. “Benjamin Proudfoot, I daresay you’ve grown taller since I’ve seen you last,” he added, sending Ben a long, friendly look before turning to stare at Jim. His naturally cheery expression remained the same, but his eyes bore a different regard, the nature of which, Jim could not detect and Ben could not understand.

Jim, who had not noticed the change in Gandalf’s eyes, said when he had recollected his breath, “Hullo, Gandalf.”

Gandalf did not reply right away, but spoke only after a few long moments had passed. “James Anderson Brandybuck,” he said in a tone that barely rose above the shadow of a whisper.

Both stood waiting for him to continue, and at his silence, they exchanged looks of surprise. Finally, after a few more moments of this, Jim prompted, “Yes, Gandalf?”

Gandalf blinked and continued slowly, his tone as serious as his eyes, “My boy, you look exactly like your father.”

Jim’s smile dwindled slightly at these words and bowed his head a little. He struggled to find words, which did not easily come. He raised his head and cleared his throat. “Thank you…Gandalf…” he said, and as he spoke the words, his voice cracked over the lump that had arisen in his throat. He flashed a weak smile and Gandalf nodded, satisfied with something that neither of the two hobbits could figure out.
