Title: Somthing Evil This Way Comes (part 6)
With a light-hearted chuckle, Gandalf’s eyes returned to their original state and he patted the seat beside him, an invitation to join him in the wagon. Jim took the seat beside Gandalf and Ben climbed up to sit beside his friend, still pondering the strange look that Gandalf had given Jim the moment before.
Gandalf placed his pipe between his teeth and (with a hearty “hyah!” from Gandalf) the wagon began to bump along the road toward the square. As Ben was momentarily distracted by a fly that seemed to linger about his ears, no matter how many times he swatted at it, Gandalf leaned low to Jim and whispered into his ear, “Tomorrow morning, promptly at sunrise, meet me near the Brandywine Bridge. I’d like a word with you. But…kindly speak of it to no one.” After Jim nodded after half a moment’s hesitation, Gandalf straightened up, muttering, “Good lad, good lad…”
Jim’s forehead wrinkled as he watched Gandalf for a moment out of the corner of his eye, then turned to watch the road, unable to imagine why Gandalf would wish to see him so early in the day, and no less unable to see why he would request that he did not come in the company of his dear friend, Ben.
These thoughts were interrupted by the sound of excited villagers as they rushed to greet the wagon.
“Gandalf!”
“He’s back! Come and see!”
“Gandalf? Isn’t he the one who does the fireworks? He is, isn’t he? Oh, I like that fellow!”
“Wha’ in the Grey ‘avens is ‘e doin’ ‘ere?”
“And look! It’s Ben Proudfoot and James Brandybuck!”
Jim’s face brightened as he saw everyone gathering to greet Gandalf, happy to be next to him instead of lost in the crowd, far away. Ben, happy to be recognized for any reason, was waving to the crowd as if he were Gandalf himself.
