'Hmm, okay.' The man nodded. 'Would you rather battle a strong person, a
weak person, or anybody?'
'A strong person,' I said.
'I see . . .' the man said. 'Crystal, you care deeply for Pokémon. To you, they are not just necessary as tools of war. They are all important. You have passed the test.'
Just then Clair walked in. 'So did you pass?' she asked me. 'I bet you didn't.'
'Yes, she did,' the man said.
'What?' Clair cried. 'That can't be true! I didn't even pass!'
'Clair,' the man said angrily, 'confer upon her the rising badge! Or should I tell Master Lance about this?'
Clair gulped. She reached into her pocket and handed me a badge. 'There. Fine. Satisfied?' With that, she ran out.
The man shook his head. He reached into his pokcet and pulled out a round blue stone on a string. He held it out to me.
'What is it?' I asked. 'It's so pretty.'
'It's a hunk of sapphire,' the man said. 'Everyone who passes the test gets a precious stone. If you wear it around your neck, it will bring you good fortune.' He smiled. 'We have tons of them, but we've only given away two.'
I laughed. 'I guess good trainers are rare these days.' I put the sapphire necklace around my neck. 'Thank you, sir. For everything.'
The man nodded. 'You are welcome, Crystal. Now go on and win the Pokémon League! I'll be rooting for you all the way.'
