Title: Friends Come In Many Forms
FRIENDS COME IN MANY FORMS
Written by: Safina Lone
Today was not like any other day in Shimerz Town. Tomorrow was the beginning of a new school year and everyone was busy trying to get everything ready for their big day.
Dre (porcupine) was not looking forward going back to school. He had just moved into the town with his parents and he didn’t know anyone. He knew it would be tough for him to start all over again, with making new friends and getting used to a new environment.
Finally after days of nervousness, it was the morning of the first day of school.
"Dad," Dre said, with his mouth full of cereal, "do I really have to go to this new school. Don’t you think it would be better for me if you were to drive me and drop me off on your way to work every morning?"
"Now son, you know you have to get used to this school. I can’t drive you back to Sunnybrook every morning, it’s too far." His dad finished up his last bit of coffee and went back to reading his paper.
"All right," Dre said, mumbling as he walked away " I’ll give it a try, but I won’t like it."
The bus ride to school was horrible. Dre didn’t know any one. At the last stop a monkey came and sat next to him, Dre didn’t say a word.
The bus came to a stop and everyone started filing out. As Dre walked through the doors of Shimerz Elementary he stopped and looked around. Things here seemed pretty similar to him. Weirdly this school had the same funny smell of burnt cheese coming from the cafeteria. This smell was quite comforting.
Wow! Dre thought. Maybe things here won’t be that bad. He realized that his new school wasn’t as scary as he had thought. He imagined teachers with red beady eyes, windows with bars and walls painted black with mold and odd creatures hanging from them. This was a huge surprise.
With his schedule in hand Dre took off to find room 182. His new teachers name was Mrs. Blink. Mrs. Blink of room 182. Dre was somewhat excited to have her as a teacher. He had overheard kids in the hall talking about her and she sounded very nice.
Dre found his class and walked in to see a slender rabbit with long ears. That must be Mrs. Blink. She had bright orange shoes on and ruby red beads around her neck. He decided, after looking around for a while, that he liked the appearance of the classroom. In the back corner there were tons of books piled into jagged stacks. There were different signs all over the walls with sayings like "Succeed.....read" and "Learning is fun!"
Dre picked a seat and watches as people started coming in the room. He paid attention as attendance was being read so he could learn everyone’s names. There was Reese, a bear, Molly, a turtle, Shady, a turtle, Allison, a cat, Diamond, a bunny and John, a dog.
So far class was going great. They played the name game so everyone got to know everyone else. Dre started talking to Shady and Reese. Reese was funny and he always seemed to be eating peanut butter cups. Dre, Reese and Shady were inseparable, for the weeks after they did everything and went everywhere together. They all found out that they had a lot in common and made a pact not to let any one ruin their friendship.
Later that week Mr. Walker (penguin), the kid’s gym teacher announced to them that they would be starting a new unit, ice hockey. All the kids were so excited no one could wait to get at the chance to try to play like the professionals.
They were split up into two teams and they started playing. Dre’s team was doing great, after all Reese and Shady were both on his team. There was a kid on the other team named Sam (a pig). He was bigger than anyone else in the class was so naturally people were trying to stay out of his way. The next thing Dre knew he was on the ground. Sam had hit him with his stick. Reese and Shady both skated over to him and helped him up. Reese was so mad that someone had tried to hurt his friend that he took off after Sam and the started arguing. Shady and Dre tried to stop the fight because they knew everyone would get in trouble.
Well, they were right. Mr. Walker came running over to them and without asking any questions, sent them all to the principal’s office. Pricipal Belding (Dog) Gave everyone a lecture on misconduct and how to get along with each other without loosing their tempers. He then called all the kids parents and they were sent home.
Dre, Shady and Reese were all scared of what their parents would say. They were all watching Sam as he waited for his mom. He didn’t seem to care at all that he had gotten into trouble. It must have been because this happened to him a lot. Sam was the bully of the 3rd grade.
That night each of the kids got another lecture from their parents. It sounded very similar to the one they got from the principal. Reese and Shady just got grounded for a week with no TV or after school activities. With Dre on the other hand it was a different story. His punishment was much worse.
"Dre" his father said, "I don’t like what happened at school today. I feel these new friends of yours are acting as bad influences on you. When we lived in Sunnybrook you never had any problems. I don’t want to say this but I think you should just stick to your own kind. Play with other young porcupines and you won’t have this problem. I’m sorry to make you do this but I don’t want you to play with those kids anymore, do I make myself clear."
Dre was so shaken up by what he had just heard his father say that he just wanted it all to be over with. "Yes," Dre said holding back tears. Then Dre turned and fled to his room.
The next day at school Dre explained to his friends what had happened. "I can’t believe this" Shady said. Then they decided to take the problem to Mrs Blink. She could not believe that Dre’s parents were acting in such an ignorant beahvior. Mrs Blink then said, " Your parents should understand that evryone is equall, and you should hang out with anyone you want to, no matter where you’re from, and what you are."
Dre then asked, "Mrs Blink is there any way that we can change my parents minds about Shady and my other friends?" "Yes we can" Mrs. Blink aswered "I will arrange a meeting so that all of your parents can get together but I need help from all of you."
So later that night there was a knock on Dre’s door and his father opened it. "Hi" Said Resses father " I was told we were to meet over here at 8:00, I hope were not early". Looking confused Dre’s Dad let them in.
A few moments later Shadys parents were at the door. All of the sudden the three kids, with Mrs. Blink opened the door and stepped in. They all explained their sides of the story. "We don’t think its right to split up a friendship over something little that happened," they all said. Then Dre said "dad, these are my best friends and I’m not going to give them up because they are the wrong color or race. I like them for who they are and how they treat me. In addition, to what had happend, they didn’t do anything to get me in trouble; they were standing up for me. If that isn’t friendship then I don’t know what is."
I don’t undestand why you will not Dre be friends with other creatures besides Pourcupines. We are all equall, and race, color, and the way you look like should not determine someones friendship. I think you should think again about your decion about who dre should be friends with." Said Mrs. Blink
After about an hour and a half of the kids, parents, and Mrs. Blink’s talking and getting to know each other; Dre’s dad spoke up "I realize now that I was wrong and I’m sorry. I am glad my son can have the kind of friends that will look out for him and that welcomed him into a new school when he had no one. I was foolish to judge you before I knew the whole story. From now on all of you are welcome here anytime. Now as for Sam, we need to do something about him. Monday morning I’ll call the school and talk to them about this suspension, you kids didn’t start it and I think your principal should know it"
From then on the three families became really close, they went on vacations together and to the movies or picnics. They all learned that you should never judge anyone based on their outward appearance, just what’s on the inside. Dre learned that making changes in your life, like moving, isn’t always a bad thing. It just takes some adjusting and getting used to. Don’t make little issues into huge problems, deal with them as they come along, don’t prejudge. Dre was glad that his parents finally came to realize that friends come in many forms.
