Title: Finding Out Who

Chapter 3
For almost six years, I had sung that song every morning. I’d memorized it very
well. When you think about the words, they’re very dramatic.
After the song finished, everyone sat down. I sat down and pulled out a free
reading book. Since I was done with my journal, and when your done with your journal,
you can free read or free draw until it’s time to go to P.E.
The book I was reading was The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. It
was very interesting, and it was right up my alley, considering the fact that I loved animals
and fictional stories.
I only got to read for a few minutes before my teacher, Mrs. Vanden Branden,
asked for our attention. But it was still to early to go to P.E. Maybe she was going to give
us a lecture, or something else along those lines.
"Children, today we’re going to practice one of our many drills. But not a fire drill
or a tornado drill. Instead, we’re going to practice a quiet time drill. Does anybody know
what that means?"
Nobody rose their hands.
"O.K. then," Mrs. Vanden Branden went on, "I’ll explain it to you. First off, when
Mr. Cein says ‘Quiet time’ over the intercom, then what we have to do is get into a corner
of the room where someone looking into one of the windows or doors can’t see us."
I looked around the room. My room was one of the only rooms in the building
with two doors. And that would make it difficult to hide.
"But we aren’t going to be in our home rooms during quiet time. Since when we
have to use the drill, we might not be fortunate enough to be in our home rooms. Instead,
quiet time will be called for when you are all in science class. So I expect that you all obey
Ms. Gregg’s directions."
Right then Robin rose her hand.
"Yes Robin?" Mrs. Vanden Branden asked.
"Well," Robin began, "What is a quiet drill for? You’ve told us everything except
what the point of a quiet drill is."
"Oh, I didn’t, did I? And you must know what the quiet drill is for! Kids, a quiet
drill is incase an intruder comes into the building. Because if a dangerous person, weather
he’s carrying a club, gun, or anything that can harm, comes into the building, we want him
to think that we’re not here for his target practice."
A few girls shuddered, and a few boys went, "Cool man". What a quiet drill was,
did sound kind of creepy, but nothing to really make a fuss over.
