Title: Fish Fable

Freddy the fish lay rigid in his bed of coral. He wrapped his sponge-comforter up around his chin. Freddy’s mother came up behind him to say goodnight. "Well, Freddy, tomorrow might be quite a challenge," commented his mother, referring to Freddy’s first day at the School Of Fish. "A challenge? More like a scene from Jaws 2!" emphasized Freddy. "We have to swim all the way to the deep waters!" "You’d better get your rest then. Goodnight." Abruptly Mrs. Fish left the premises.
That night, Freddy had a terrible dream. He stood before the cave entrance to the deep waters and peered in. He imagined eerie, faltering voices drifting up from the hollow of the cave. The barely audible voices bade him to join them, but he would not. Freddy pictured in his mind the floating creatures and woke up with a start.
The next morning, two more unsuspecting fishies went off toward the cave entrance. Freddy and his partner were next in line. The crayfish, a sturdy but particularly ruffled-looking bully, approached Freddy and Freda. "Have you heard what happened to the three minnows?" he bellowed. "No," Freda sputtered, "but might you tell it to us?" "Well, three minnows, about your age, I suppose, wandered into the cave unaware of the perils," began the ruffian, "They were stranded for days in the deep waters, and when their bodies were finally recovered…they had no fins or tails!" Freddy was aghast, but Freda scoffed at the bully’s tale. However, before she could protest, the two reluctant partners were summoned to take their turn.
"Would you pull that seaweed away from your eyes?" Freda teased nervously, upon entering the cave. "You’ll have to look some time or another!" They moved in silence after that, until light penetrated Freddy’s eyelids. He snapped them open and gasped, "Why, the deep waters aren’t dreadful at all! The fish are all the same, and no one has tried to eat me yet." And indeed, Freddy was right. Because many times, your fears are worse than the reality.
