Title: Les Misérables
Les Misérables is a book that is only for people who either have a lot of time to burn,
or for incredibly advanced readers. It is 1462 pages long and in about size 10 font.
It is based around the time of the French Revolution and focuses on five main characters: Fantine, Jean Valjean, Inspector Jevert, Cosette and Marius. The book is divided into 4 sections: Fantine, Cosette, Marius and Jean Valjean. These are again separated into books then again into chapters.
Jean Valjean is an escaped convict who makes a new start after escaping from being imprisoned for steeling a loaf of bread after the new, harsh laws are put down in France. He was originally imprisoned for five years, but make two escape attempts were he is caught, which brings his imprisonment up to sixteen years. On his third attempt to escape he succeeds.
Fantine is a young, intelligent girl who has no idea about her origins after being found in the street as a baby. She is in her early twenties when we meet her and is in love with a young man. She is one of a group of four. They are also in love with the other three members of the other group.
The men say they have a surprise for the ladies. This turns out to be them running away. Fantine bursts into tears when she returns to her lodgings: '...She had given herself Tholomyés as to a husband, and the poor girl had a child.'
Here is the difference in time: By the time we meet Fantine, Jean Valjean has escaped and it is six years after his escape. He has become major of a small town called M__ Sur M__ (There is no name here given). It was going bankrupt until Mousier Maderline arrived and saved the town.
Just as everything is going so well for Valjean, Jevert arrives. Inspector Jevert was a Prison Warden and leader of the search for Jean Valjean. Now he has returned and Valjean's life is in danger. If he is caught, he could be recaptured and sentenced for life imprisonment.
