Title: HorseCare, Chapter 4, Mucking Out
For those of you who haven't read the first three installments to my 'HorseCare' series, HorseCare is all about caring for horses and ponies. I try to write it with people who don't know anything about horses in mind. But also, I think it could be a big help to beginning riders as well. If you haven't read the first three chapters, please do! You can use the search engine to find them. If you have any questions about horses, please ask me and I will answer them in my next chapter.
And now, without further ado...
Chapter 4: Mucking Out
So now you've learned about feeding and grooming a horse or pony. You've acquired a lot of knowledge about what it takes to have your own horse or pony.
But this chapter is very important. It completely covers the cleaning of your horse's stall.
As I've said before, there are many different types of bedding to use. You need to research what kind of bedding would be best for your horse, because all horses are different. Two of the most popular types of bedding are straw and wood shavings. They each have pros and cons and it will depend on your horse which kind of bedding you will use. Research ALL the possibilities and choose the absolute best, because your horse's well-being is at stake.
Now that you've chosen a bedding, you will need to clean out your horse's stall twice a day. Begin by scooping out the piles of poop into a wheelbarrow with a pitchfork. Then, using a stall-mucking shovel, get rid of any wet spots you see. Once every spot of soiled bedding has been scooped out, use your pitchfork to comb through the bedding to see if you have missed anything. Then, build up the bedding in the middle.
Once every week or two weeks or so, you will need to strip, or remove ALL the bedding from, your horse's stall and replace it with new bedding. This keeps the stall clean and makes your horse more comfortable.
REMEMBER: Clean your horse's stall at least twice a day! This is very important!
Thanks for reading the lastest chapter of HorseCare, and if you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them in my next HorseCare post.
