Title: The Blue Pearl
It was a wrm summers evening. The children were playing in the rock pools, crabbing and catching shrimps as the tide came in. Many children had gone home now and the beach was quiet as quiet as beaches can go. The sounds of the sea crashing onto the sand could still be heard of course and the laughter of the seagulls rang above on the tall eroded cliffs but Jack and Sally were in no hurry to go anywhere. This was where they belonged, salt water ran through their very veins, Grandpa said so, for Grandpa used to be a captain on a pirate ship many years ago. The children were not afriad of pirates. They longed to see a pirate or even to be kidnapped by a smuggler and have an adventure out on the high seas looking for gold. The sun was dimming and a dim gold light began to form across the pink clouds above the sea.The sun was red and low, sinking behind the tall cliffs.
Jack found it first and he howled with excitement as he fished it out with his net. Sally clambered over to him with her bucket and a freshly caught crab and bent down beside Jack as he examined his catch.
'Jack what on earth have you caught?' She asked bending her head to see. Jack shrugged and cleared away the seaweed and mud. He washed the dirt off with the salt water and examined it. A large blue ball fell into his hand, smooth as glass and shining in the dim sunlight. Jack looked at Sally.
'What on earth is this?' He asked her wonderingly.
'Some kind of stone I think.' She replied. It seemed oddly beautiful and Sally then said.
'It might be treasure, Jack. Lets take it home to Grandpa, he'll know what it is.'
'Good idea. Grandpa knows everything.' The two children put back their crabs and shrimps and watched them scuttle back underneath the rocks. Jack took Sally's hand and they began to climb back down to the lower beach. They ran across the sand, the blue object now resting safely inside Jack's pocket. They came to a set of large caves along the bay. Each one pitch black. Jack looked at Sally excitedly and she knew what he was thinking.
'Last one to the other side is a chicken.' He called and he ran to the middle cave. Sally was reluctant but she followed him. She reached the mouth of the cave and peered inside. It was creepy and she could hear Jack's footsteps a little way inside.
'Careful, Jack.' She called out softly and her voice was magnified ten times is usual volume. Sally stepped in. It was very slippery and she could tell that in a couple of hours it would be full with seawater. She mad eher way along the cave in the dark, running her hands along the side of the cave. She heard a scuttling noise ahead of her.
'Jack?' She called again and her voice wavered. She was beginning to get a little firghtened.
'Jack, please come here.' But there was no reply. She hurried along the cave and felt it getting narrower and narrower, she didn't know where it would end. There was a little scream somewhere ahead of her and she stopped dead in her tracks. Jack! Was he in trouble? She had to find him. She began to run along, being very careless as she went and felt her feet slipping on the surface of the cave and then she hit something hard and she fell to the cave floor with a soft thump. For a moment, she was dazed. She sat up and rubbed her head and then panic started to overtake her. She had to get out of here, the cave was beginning to fill up with water. She turned around slowly and got to her feet. She made her way back along the cave, feeling odd. Maybe Jack was waiting on the beach for her outside. She let this thought overcome her feelings of being afraid but somehow the journey back was taking a lot longer than it had when she first walked in. She heard a noise up ahead and stopped still to listen. Nothing at first and then she heard it again. Jack! It had to be him. She ran along the cave again, following the crying. If Jack was hurt she needed to find him. 'Jack?' She called out again.
'Thorugh here!' She heard a muffled voice and ran through a narrow tunnel. Light suddenly came to her eyes and she squinted.
'Jack?' She called softly but there wasa no reply. She turned around the cave and could see no one.
'I know you are in here, I heard you call me, now come out this instant, this isn't funny anymore!' Sally was getting cross. She turned around and screamed. Sitting on a rock behind her was a sick and pale looking scraggly boy. He had a bandanna tied around his head and his trousers were torn. He was extremely thin and his thin black hair was tied back in a ponytail. His wide blue staring eyes were misty and unfocused and made him look oddly ghost like. Sally backed away from him, this boy scared her.
'Where's jack?' she asked shakily.
'What have you done with my brother?'
The boy looked at her unblinkingly and watched her for a moment. Thgen said.
'Help me.' Sally stopped in her tracks.
'Help me!' The boy replied. His voice carried no emmotion but if it did he would have been anxious.
'Who are you?' Said Sally uncertainly.
'You have to help me, please, they are coming!' The boy stood up abruptly and walked over to Sally swiftly. Sally backed away but tripped over her skirt. She fell to the floor and the boy stood over her watching her blankly. 'You have to get out of here, you have to help me!' Sally was shaking.
'I'm not going anywhere wihtout Jack!' She screamed.
'It is too late, they have got him, they have taken him!' Sally's heart dropped like a stone.
'Taken him where? Who are you?'
'It is to late, we have to go.' The boy held out his hand but Sally backed away.
'Don't touch me, I want Jack!' The boy ignored her but Sally began to scream and he made a quick move towards her and put his hand over her mouth. She struggled but the boys grip was like iron.
'It is to late, he has released the power of the blue pearl and now they have taken him.' Sally's eyes were wide with fear. The blue object they found in the rock pools. The boy released her and Sally said.
'Please, you have to help me!'v Said the boy again. Sally looked uncertainly at the strange boy.
'I want to go home!' She said beginning to cry.
'There is no home.' He replied.
'What?' Asked Sally.
'You do not exist yet!' He said. Sally burst into tears,
'Of course I do, I'm standing here talking to you and you are scaring me!' She said savagely.
'I do not know what scared is, I do not feel these emmotions you have. We have to go.' He said slowly.
'You are not telling me where!' She said desperately. The boy pointed to a small door right at the back of the cave. Sally didn't understand.
'We have to go back to my time. It's the only way of saving your brother.' Sally's heart lept.
'Where is your time?' She asked. For the first time the boy's face looked close sadness.
'I am beginning to forget. I can't remember where or when it is. But we go all the same.' And with this he lead her to the door. Sally opened it and a burst of golden sunlight reached her eyes. She could see the sea and the tall cliffs and in the distance a ship was sailing on the horizon. 'After you.' Said the boy and Sally stepped through the door and felt herselflifted off her feet into the air and she was flying inthe air with the seagulls crying in the cool breeze....
