Title: The Mouse
The Mouse Who Cried Cat
Mouse Jake and his friends lived in a mouse hole. His friends were gathering cheese to last them through the winter. Jake’s job was to watch out for Ginger the cat. If he saw Ginger, he had to warn the other mice so they would get to their mouse hole safely.
One day, Jake thought it would be fun to trick his friends. So he waited patiently until they were working hard and shouted, “Ginger is here!”
All his friends ran to their mouse hole. Then they heard laughing. It was Jake.
They didn’t like that one bit, so they were upset. One of Jake’s friends said, “Lying is not funny, and if we waste our time on all your jokes, we will have no food for the winter.”
But Jake wouldn’t listen. He is far too busy thinking how funny it was. Then he waited again and then shouted, “CAT! RUN!”
All his friends rushed to safety again, thinking that Ginger was nearby. Then they heard Jake laughing again.
This time his friends were even more upset. “STOP IT! We hate lies!” all his friends shouted.
But Jake still thought his joke was funny. When his friends got to work, Jake saw something gold and yellow in the distance. It was Ginger!
“Quick! The cat is here!” shouted Jake as loud as he could. But his friends just kept working because they didn’t trust him anymore.
As little Tim mouse turned, he saw Ginger getting ready to leap. “Run! The cat is here!” he shouted.
“MEOW!” Ginger opened her big mouth. The other mice dropped what they were doing and ran as fast as they could out of Ginger’s reach. They got to safety just in time.
Jake really didn’t want his friends to be hurt. He felt deeply sorry and never joked or lied like that again. To make it up to his friends, he worked very hard to gather extra food for the rest of the day.
