Title: Ancient Baladora
“Hurry Mark! Clara’s waiting for you in the car,” my mom yelled at me impatiently. I grabbed my favorite blue shorts. I loved blue. My sister said it’s because of my eyes. I have long curly brown hair, blue eyes, and a light face.
I threw on my back pack with all my clothes and accessories in it. I raced down the stairs and went to the front door. I hugged my mom and sister Jessica. My mom worried about me like I was a little kid, I was fourteen.
We arrived at the airport in about twenty minutes. I was visiting my aunt’s favorite jungle, Baladora. I hadn’t seen her in six years. This was my first time leaving Florida. “We’ll have a fantastic time,” Clara cheered me up. I was a little scared of planes.
We sat down in the first class section alone. When the plane took off, I reassured my self that I was sage. I fastened my seatbelt tight. “Oh, wait till you get there,” Clara stated excitedly.
About two hours later, we started heading down, I looked at Baladora. It was a big jungle. We landed on the airstrip a few minutes later.
We walked through the dry rocky path. Tall trees laid some shade for us. I could see heat waves in the distance. I wiped sweat off my forehead with the back of my hand. I saw a green snake as long and thin as my arm. I guess I spent too much time sight-seeing a toucan, I had to jog to catch up with Clara. I pulled out my note pamphlet. I wrote down: I wanted to remember what these animals were like. I didn’t know that I’d be seeing a lot more soon… creepy ones!
“Keep up! We’re just around the corner to our cabins.” Clara turned to a ninety degree angle to her left and walked past some bushes. I had to jog to keep up with her. It was about ninety degrees!
In our cabins we had dressers, chairs and a bed. There was also a toilet stall in the corner of the cabin.
Outside, we made a fire with flint, twigs, and leaves. “Tomorrow we’ll wake up early and I’ll take you on my tour,” Clara said cheerfully. “I’m sure I’ll like it. A trip around the jungle,” I said. “Well, see you in the morning, goodnight,” Clara waved good-bye. She walked to her cabin.
The air started to feel cooler. It was getting dark. The colder it got, the less I wanted to get away from the fire.
I felt a chill on the back of my neck. It’s raining?! I thought. I looked up at the sky. The big gray clouds looked like big puff-balls. It was raining clearly now. I didn’t realize how dark it was until the fire sparked out. I waited for my eyes to adjust to the dark. I heard creepy sounds I didn’t hear earlier.
I walked to my cabin when I heard a growl. I turned back to see a jaguar! Its red bright eyes burned into mine. Its face gave me a threatening snarl. Its claws hung from its paws. The jaguar’s front paw curled up. He moved silently like the cool wind. My throat felt so dry, as if I had forgotten to breathe! The jaguar seemed as if he was ready to pounce.
It rained harder. “No…” I let out a low groan. I started to choke. The jaguar tackled me into my cabin wall. My back crashed hard against the cabin. The cat hissed at me hard. Then, the impossible happened! It stormed incredibly hard. Thunder rained down in the distance. Some type of invisible force blew the jaguar away. The jaguar blew away past some trees. It was unbelievable! I slowly walked towards it. The jaguar appeared to be unconscious. Unbelievable, I thought.
I walked over to my cabin dazed. I slumped over my bed. In a few seconds I was asleep.
The next morning, I could barely get up. I picked my body up wearily to the foot of my bed. The temperature was hot again. Was last night a dream? I thought. Sweat ran down my arms and forehead. My chest was hot and itchy. I dressed with my blue shorts and a white sleeveless shirt.
I walked out of my cabin drinking or better yet absorbing the few droplets left in my water bottle. I knocked on Clara’s door. She was supposed to wake me up, I thought. “Wake up Clara!” I yelled. No answer. “Clara!” I began to worry. I looked around. There were just trees.
There was nothing but trees. “Clara, I’m coming in!” I pushed the door open. No one was inside. I heard creepy sounds. My back was terribly sore. I needed a rest, I thought. I turned around and saw a monkey. “That’s weird,” I said aloud. “Here, monkey.” It didn’t come near me. It turned around and slowly walked away on its four legs. The monkey stopped, and looked back one last time. Its eyes were sad looking. I don’t know what got into me, but I followed the monkey. Before I knew it, I had followed the monkey to a cave. The monkey looked as if it was being possessed, and when I thought about it, so did the jaguar.
The cave was dark. Wind rustled against the rocks. The breeze felt good. All of a sudden, a fire lit the inside of the cave. The rock wall shined. They were still wet. I looked around. I took a step forward and asked, “Is anybody there?” There were a few sounds of the fire sparking and of rocks stumbling. What’s that? I wondered. I didn’t see the monkey anymore. I walked deeper into the cave. When I spotted the fire, the cave reached an end. I slowly examined the fire. I was about half a foot away from the fire when it rose into a stronger fire with scorching heat. I found a camouflaged brown chest. I walked over to it. It didn’t have a lock. I opened it. In the chest there was a sheet. No, it is a suit, I thought. When I grabbed it, I realized it was clothes. There was a necklace in the bottom of the chest. There was also a note in the chest. I unfolded it. It read:
“What is this?” I said aloud. It was definitely old. I held the necklace in my right hand. I examined it closely. It had a weird outline and design. A diamond shape jewel, and a tornado design (at least it looked like it).
I put on the chain. I looked at the fire. “Okay, let’s try this,” I said sarcastically. I held my hand to the fire. Go away, I thought. A gust of wind blew the fire out. Is this a coincidence?
I looked down at the wood. Amazing! I ran out of the cave with the clothes and my new special pendant.
I walked past trees and trees. After a while I came to a big open field. To the far left, a high canyon stood. On top, seven big boulders stood on the edge. All of a sudden, water broke free from the rocks. It came down like a waterfall, but towards my way! I had to do something! I used my wind ability. Nothing happened. The water was about two feet away from me when it crashed an invisible force-field. It washed up against the force. I thought I should do the right thing, so I use my wind abilities to push the force back to where the water came down from. With my wind power, I put the huge rocks as a blockade once again to hold the water. A high rock wall should hold it. The high boulder wall surrounded the water in a square.
Around the canyon there was a path leading up its rocks. I walked up the mountain. It was a good view on the canyon. I wrote down in my pamphlet. Gorillas- huge, furry, and rare. What else? I thought.
When I raised my head from writing, I couldn’t see the gorilla anymore. I turned around to see one right by me! It grabbed and squeezed me very tight. My bones seemed to crush. He launched me off the cliff! I went flying straight to the ground. Think fast, I thought. I used my wind powers to free the water that was trapped between rocks. I landed straight water. The gorilla vanished. “Mark? Where are you?!” I heard Clara call. “Clara!” I yelled back. “Over here!”
Aunt Clara told me that a gorilla captured her and took her away. “Where did he take you?” I asked Clara. “Here.” She replied back. I showed Clara my power. I was kind of nervous. I explained about how it happened and the chain. Clara had a souvenir, too. The crystal ball fits perfectly in the palm of my hand. “I don’t know what it does but it looks special.” Clara said. It shined bright. All of a sudden, animals of various types came from bushes all around.
Giraffes, lions, birds, cheetahs, elephants, and lizards came. “The crystal ball is attracting them!” I yelled. I actually thought it did. Now it was time to end this mystery. I yanked the crystal ball from Clara and smashed it against a rock. The animals came closer and faster. “Stop,” Clara tried to stop me. “I must destroy it!” I urged back as the animals neared us, I used my wind ability. A hurricane blew the animals back. I smashed the crystal again. A shard came off. “This is the- source of possession- to all Baladora’s animals!” I said while smashing the crystal. All of a sudden, the hurricane defense went out. A lion roared as he got closer. The lion scratched my chest with its claws. I tried to blow it away, but nothing happened. The lion had my chain!
I grabbed Clara in one hand and the crystal in the other. I dashed off. I ran to the airport. I jumped over a fence to the airstrip. A plane was taking off. “Come back!” Clara yelled from the other side of the fence. I laid the crystal in the plane’s path. I moved away. The plane’s tire crushed the crystal. Its shine was gone.
That was my adventure. We took a flight back to Florida without telling anyone about the wonderful magic in Baladora. I lost the chain, but I will always remember my trip to Baladora.
