Title: Paris

Paris—tiny but elegant,
It lives on a language of unctuous syllables and subtle scents,
Buttered croissants on china plates—
Little balconies strung from wire
Everything spindly-legged,
Everything thin,
And dignified,
And black dresses
High-heeled Parisian woman
In golden light and running Seine
Little round dishes of brown hot-chocolate, lying peacefully on the hourglass table,
Watching strangers go by—
It is laid out so often the faces become familiar
And the lights from the summer fairs still shine on its rim

43 years and it doesn’t change:
Every sound is still soft and rhythmic,
So purposeful,
Nothing is a mistake,
nothing is by chance in Paris.
Pastries are spread-eagled beneath the glass case,
Foaming with sweet cheese and lemon icing—
Faerie cakes,
But the espressos are sharp,
Always black, and staining the cup with a brown line until the waitress twirls it with a cloth.
The apartments in Paris seem to fold in on each other,
One of those paper doll houses that are painted so beautifully,
But have to be tied with red ribbon to stay together—
The walls are so thin.
But the people are light,
So the floors don’t have much burden—
Their dwellings are simple,
But it is enough, for they are always out in the musky breezes,
Filling the streets with a throaty laugh
And the clinking of wine.
